Tests 1 & 2 – Land Double and a Land Blind

The first day of this National is being held at H. Cooper Black near Goose Pond. Test One is a Double with a Rooster Flyer and a Short Retired Rooster. It's followed by a Land Blind.

The mat sits beside a road on the top of a hill. The terrain angles down and then back up the far side. There are a few small trees just the other side of the valley that are sparsely spread across the entire hill. The ground cover is sparse with intermittent broom straw. As you go up the far hill, the cover becomes thicker. There are hay bales approximately 100 yards right of the flyer station that are not in play.

Bird #1 is a Dead Rooster Pheasant located 125 yards from the hill, angled right to the base of two trees. The gunners retire behind a well-brushed area just in the draw at the base of the hill.

Bird #2 is a Rooster Pheasant Flyer. The gunners are located straight in front of the mat 215 yards towards the top of the far hill. The gunners shoot and throw the rooster angled back to the right. This bird lands in broom straw across a mowed strip.

After the dogs retrieves both birds, they must run a blind. The hen mallard is located 200 yards to the handler's left. The line has the dog holding the side of the hill as they angle towards the draw, then back up the far hill for a very short distance to the left of a small tree. The blind is marked by a small evergreen.

This Double and Blind take just under 5 minutes.

There was a lifetime qualification change voted in at last year's National. It's now been decided to revote on the by-law change. There will be a special meeting on January 1st, 2022, and voting will be done via an electronic ballot or a paper version. This was opened to the floor to vote:

Dave Rorem supports the new rule. He said it's so hard to win, why not keep the lifetime qualification. That's why it passed.

John Russell sees his point but says that, historically, achievement was measure in qualifications. That's the way it's always been done.

Kenny Trott agrees with both sides of the issue.

Jeff Talley asks that anyone who disagrees should submit changes or restructuring of languages.

Additional new business was a suggestion by Kate Simonds that the trophy be housed at the Hall of Fame and a smaller, silver dog will be presented instead to the winner. A motion was made and the National Club said they would look into it.

There has been no requests for changes for two years. If you have a change, you are encouraged send an email to John Russell.

Opened to floor:
Mitch Patterson - During COVID, judges had an option to hang or bucket the bird. This was a provisional clause that expires 12/31/2021. It's the judges responsibility to examine the birds and to determine whether or not they should be reused.

There was a question on wording about blinds being clearly or conspicuously marked. The event committee needs to monitor this.

Jeff Talley - There have been 10 times the normal number of complaints regarding birds being of poor quality, specifically when they're sent out to the field and while in a dog's mouth upon return.

Mark Atwater - Across every venue, the bird quality was poor overall.

Response from John Russell - Judges, marshals, and clubs should all help to make sure the birds are suitable to go out into the field. Judges should also inspect the birds on return.

Mark Menzies - Mark brought brought up that the index of the AKC Rulebook needs attention and revision so that information can be resourced easily and quickly.

Russ Reavis says that the appendix has been amended and it will be published in the next revision of the AKC Rulebook.

Meeting adjourned at 1:30 pm EST.
